What is GEO and how to get cited by ChatGPT

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content to be cited by AI assistants. How it differs from SEO, and what to change on your pages.

Original in Portuguese

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so it gets cited in answers from generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. Unlike SEO, the goal is not the click — it is being the source the model uses and names when it answers.

Why GEO became necessary

A growing share of searches now ends without a click. Someone asks, the AI answers, and they never visit the site the information came from.

For anyone who depends on organic traffic, that changes the economics of the channel: the impression still exists, but the click does not. What retains value is being cited — appearing as the named source of the answer.

It is worth stating what is not yet known: this is a new field with no consolidated metrics and no official console. What exists are practices with sound logic and observable results, not a validated playbook.

How it differs from SEO

SEO optimizes a page to rank as a whole. GEO optimizes passages to be extracted and reused.

Language models do not read a page end to end when composing an answer — they retrieve passages that answer the question in a self-contained way. A paragraph that only makes sense given the three before it is unlikely to be cited.

The practical consequence: every section has to work in isolation, with its main claim complete and verifiable inside it.

What to change on your pages

Direct answer first. Open every page and every section with the answer in 40 to 60 words, before the context. It is the format models extract most often.

Headings as questions. Use H2 and H3 to mirror the questions people actually ask, and answer immediately below.

Concrete, attributable data. Numbers, formulas, ranges and specific timeframes get cited far more than general assertions.

Structured data. FAQPage, Article and HowTo schema make the structure explicit to anything parsing the page.

Crawler access. Check your robots.txt to confirm GPTBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and ClaudeBot can crawl the site. Blocking them removes you from the pool of possible sources.

How to measure without a console

There is no Search Console for generative AI, so measurement is manual and laborious.

Build a list of the 20 to 30 questions your buyer would ask and test them periodically across the major tools, recording whether your brand appears and in what context. It is sampling, not precise measurement — but it reveals direction.

Also track referral traffic from AI domains in GA4. Volume is still small on most sites, and quality tends to be high: someone arriving that way has already read a recommendation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
+

SEO aims to rank a page so it earns clicks from the results page. GEO aims for the content to be cited inside the AI-generated answer, even without a click. The technical foundations overlap heavily — crawlable, structured, trustworthy content serves both — but the writing format changes.

Should I block AI crawlers in robots.txt?
+

It is a business decision. Blocking protects your content from being used in training, but it also removes your brand from the pool of sources AI systems can cite. For a company that wants to be found, allowing usually makes more sense than protecting.

Does GEO replace SEO?
+

No. Both depend on the same foundation: a crawlable, fast site with content worth citing. GEO is a formatting and structuring layer on top of SEO, not a separate channel — abandoning SEO to do GEO would mean giving up the foundation.

How do I know if ChatGPT is citing my site?
+

There is no official report. The practical method is manually testing a fixed list of questions relevant to your business at regular intervals and recording when your brand appears. Supplement that with referral traffic from AI domains in GA4, which is already trackable.
